Well, the topic may seem to be absurd but the principle behind this is teach you how to do it rightly. Although, I am not a car instructor and also I know that most of the people reading this are good drivers (“good” here is only an assumed entity).
Driving in day to day bumper to bumper traffic conditions is something we all suffer from. But as soon as we get a small gap, we shoot in it and then again slam the brakes hard! Is that what you do too?
Well I feel sorry to write it down that if you do so, you ain’t good driver. Nor you know how to handle your ride properly.
Braking is atopic to which most of the people would not like to listen in personal and make they assume that they know how to brake. But in real life conditions it has been proven that most of the accidents occur also include a point of senseless braking or poor braking decisions. It is said that a good driver is one who brakes less, that doesn’t mean here that you drive too slow to use brakes, but what it means is that you drive in a manner which leads to optimum use of minimum braking.  Slamming brakes harder would not only cause destruction of your brake pads but also to other mechanicals of your car. So, what to do? How to brake properly?
Well here are a few tips.

ACCELERATION

This point may seem to be pointless but the reality of proper braking relies within the way you accelerate your car/bike. Well this goes like this, the harder you accelerate the faster you get, the faster you get the more need of brakes, the more braking the more effect on your ride.
Hard braking not only leads to adverse effect over mechanicals, it also leads to reduction in efficiency of your engine. Harder braking also leads to burning of more rubber that means you loose your tyres before their age limit. So, this entire sudden braking means making your pocket light weight!
In order to reduce risks of breaking down of your mechanicals and also more expensive fuel and repair bills, accelerate in a slow and steady manner. Here slow may not be necessary but steady is a term that you must follow.
Also avoid accelerating hard in moving traffic because all you have to do at the end is brake. The faster you try to go the harder you slam your brakes. That’s useless!

ENGINE RESISTANCE

This is a technical term to which many people don’t refer to. Engine resistance here means the downforce or the resistance produced by the engine when you slow down from higher rpm values to lower one in a gear. The steady or sudden degradation in power or acceleration is know as engine resistance and leads to reduction in speed of your ride considerably.
So to brake effectively without using much brake pedal you can use your gearing to produce more engine resistance that means two forces act against your moving car to stop it, one the brakes and other the resistance of engine.
But engine resistance should only be produced in a steady manner. Like shifting from 5th gear to 4th gear in a diesel car would lead to rpm values decrease (by increasing instantly and then decreasing). This would produce a force against the engine working and help to slow down your vehicle. So, downshifting and then braking lightly is impressive & effective technique. Try to embed it in your daily driving habits.

USE OF CLUTCH

If you use clutch while braking then you must drop the idea of driving. A clutch disengages the gearbox from the driving shaft and thus leads to numbness in throttle and in motion of car. If you try to brake while pressing clutch, all you do is increase risks of hazards to yourselves and others over roads.
As soon as you press the clutch pedal, the car become neutral and free and thus the engine resistance doesn’t act. This means that your car gains momentum and also looses some of friction against acceleration at the same time. So doing that would lead to doubling up working of your brakes. Would you like to do that? No? Good!

COMMON SENSE

The most effective braking condition that a human must have. If you have brain, then use it over he road. Accelerating like maniacs, zig – zagging over highways, bursting up your engine power over traffic laden highways…. All this is nothing but utter idiotism. If you do that, you risk your lives and other too over roads.
No car maker makes a vehicle to stop in milliseconds. Every car has it’s limit of comfortless. If your car can’t brake over 100kmph properly that means there is no use of running it over that speed! If you do that, stop doing it immediately!
Become sensible and responsible over roads. Leave speeding to track days!
