German auto manufacturer, VW, has recently launched their first ever notchback in the local market badged as Ameo.
Mainly designed for the Asian markets, the starting price tag is a mere Rs 5.14 lakhs ex-showroom to the top end with Rs 6.91 lakhs. While the auto world has gone crazy with the price tag which completely justifies the quality of Ameo, we question the existence period of car in the market!
Despite being offered with a lot of goodies, which are nowadays standard for the market, Ameo still uses only a petrol engine. Yes the old 1.2 Lt, 3-cylinder, 74 BHP engine from Polo does the duty here. VW has postponed the launch of diesel for the end of year as they will be upgrading the current 1.5 Lt diesel engine.
The question is whether it will do as good as to compete the segment king Maruti Swift Dzire? Dzire is selling like hot ‘samosa’ on a rainy day and yes the waiting period still prolongs on some dealerships. Although the current gen Dzire is getting old and Maruti is working on next-gen but still it remains the top seller.
Offering a petrol engine only would let the car establish among the genre of customers which prefer petrol but still a lot of the volume among buyers prefer diesel. Apart from this, VW, has been a renowned brand for their high maintenance costs and spare costs. So a buyer willing to buy a cost efficient and economical notchback might not prefer such a car.
Even Amaze has been upgraded recently and despite of the refreshing change, it is not selling as expected & Amaze also have an efficient diesel engine too !
It’s not about the failure of a product but the utter success of a pre-established product that is punching every other option in the segment, in face. VW will have to try really hard to fill up the roads with enormous amount of Ameo’s.
